Teacher in Space

My name is Chantelle Rose and I am from St. Paris, Ohio.  I am a Teachers in
Space Pathfinder Astronaut Trainee and science teacher at Graham High
School.  I have three beautiful children; Skyler, Addison and Andrie and a
spoiled Yorkie named Laika (after the first dog in space!)  I enjoy spending
time outside, learning new things and exploring everything!

In fourth grade, I knew I wanted to be an astronaut.  I am from a rural farm
school community and did not have a support system or teachers that told
me I could actually make my dream a reality.  My career path as a teacher led
me back to aerospace in 2002 when I wrote the curriculum for a new high
school science course that included 18 weeks of aviation and aerospace.

After many years of teaching the history of flight, rocketry and space
exploration units, I applied to be a "Teacher in Space".  Teachers in Space is
a non-profit program that will fly teachers on a commercial, suborbital
spacecraft.  On the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, 7
teachers nationwide were announced to be Teacher in Space Pathfinders.  I
am so honored to be among the first teachers to fly into space on a
commercial suborbital spacecraft!

During my astronaut training and through my years of teaching aerospace
topics, I have gotten the opportunity to fly in some amazing aircraft:
 *  a Key Influencer flight with the Navy Blue Angels in a F-18 at the Vectren
Dayton Air Show (thank you United States Navy).  I flew Mach 0.98, pulled
over 7 g's, did the full aerial stunt demonstration flight and felt well enough
to cloud surf on the way back to the airport!
 *  a KC-135 during a re-fueling mission (thank you Civil Air Patrol)
 *  an ultimate aerobatic experience in an Extra 300L doing loops, spins,
rolls, hammerheads, immelmanns, flying inverted and moments of
weightlessness(thank you SkyThrills and Teachers in Space)
 *  flying in a glider with retired NASA Space Shuttle Commander (thank you
Teachers in Space)
 *  flying parabolic flights to experience lunar, Martian and ISS environments
with Zero G in their modified Boeing 727 (thank you Northrup Grumman and
Zero G)
 *  flying in an open cockpit biplane (thank you EAA Chapter 1)

Aerospace education is my passion; I fly every opportunity I receive.  One of
my life goals is to earn my pilot's license.  I plan on working towards this
once my children get a little older and things slow down!

I became a teacher to inspire students...to ultimately be the person who
introduces them to new and exciting things and then encourages them to
pursue their dreams!  I wish I had been fortunate enough to have teachers
that would have told the "9 year me in my rural school" that becoming an
astronaut WAS a viable option.

I love being able to teach aviation and aerospace to students.  For many of
my students, my class is their first opportunity to build and fly their own
kites, hot air balloons, gliders, model planes and rockets.  I love sharing my
passion and enthusiasm with the next generation and engaging them in a
possible future career in the aerospace industry.

What role do skills in math, science, engineering and technology play
in supporting your job?
Math, Science and Engineering are extremely
important in looking towards the future of the aerospace industry.
Returning to the moon, going to Mars, exploring deep space will all require
skill sets that have not yet been developed.  Students must have flexibility,
be problem solvers and critical thinkers and have a passion for learning in
order to be successful!

What activities do you suggest for young children or young adults to
prepare them for a career like yours?
Learn everything you can, read,
educate yourself, play and learn to solve problems.

Additional comments: I purchased the Pilot book and had my first
introduction to Girls with Wings at the Fly-In at Grimes field in Urbana, Ohio.
I am very interested in this initiative and feel like bringing commercial
spaceflight into the group would be beneficial to all!
