Airline Captain and Author

I am an airline pilot for Arik Airlines in Africa. I live in Charlotte, NC. I have
one sister, and I am the oldest.

My first airplane ride was on Ozark Airlines. My sister and I liked to dress up,
and we thought we were big time because we could travel by ourselves. I
was eleven years old at the time. We would travel to New York City to see
our grandparents every summer. The flight crew would let us come to the
flight deck. To be able to do this regularly and stay all summer and play was
fun. It was a big deal to us.

Throughout the summer, many relatives would come to visit. My grandpa
would take us to see the airplanes take off and land while we were waiting for
them to arrive.

I knew I wanted to be an airline pilot after I took my first flying lesson with
the Civil Air Patrol. Many people tried to stand in my way. However, with hard
work and determination I made it! The core values (honesty, integrity, and
character) that I learned helped me to succeed.

I learned to fly in the Midwestern part of the United States. I have flown
small and big aircraft. (Cessnas, Pipers, CRJ, MD80, and B737) I fly a CRJ
900 for my company. I ferry B737 aircraft for companies from time to time.

As a team leader, I work with others to make sure a flight gets from
point a to b. Since flying is fun, it is not a job to me. I get to do something I
enjoy. When I leave my home to work for eight weeks at a time, I usually fly
three to four days per week. When I am off duty in Africa, I like to sightsee. I
chose to work in other continents because I like to travel. I am able to meet
people and travel all over the world. The career allows
me to use languages I learned while in school.

Although I am an airline pilot, I worked in airport management while flight
instructing. I was part of team that would make sure that the airport was in
top shape. We handled aircraft emergencies, bomb threats, and coordinated
runway/taxiway pavement repairs. This position exposed me to other
aspects of aviation and gave me experience that I needed.

I also like to write. I wrote "Nikki The Airline Pilot". It is a children's book that
is geared for K-2nd grade. It talks about what I do as a pilot when I am
working a flight.

One interesting fact about me???? hmmm... In year 1999, I was the only
certified multi-engine instructor in the state of North Carolina that trained
students in an accelerated multi-engine program. I worked for the only flight
school in the state that provided this type of program. The opportunity gave
me the experience I needed, and my students were successful.

During my freshman year in college I a few funny stories. I took an aviation
mechanics class. I was the only girl in the class and did not have a partner.
Each group (two people) had to take apart an aircraft engine and put it back
together. As part of the grade, I was required to make the engine run. With
no partner, I was a little nervous. Somehow the confidence within me and
the knowledge the teacher gave us helped me to get through it. Not only
were all of my classmates were puzzled when I started my engine, but was I
excited because I was the first one to start an engine in the class!

What role do skills in math, science, engineering and technology play
in supporting your job? What training did you undergo getting to
where you are?
From middle school to college, I took Spanish and French
classes. I also took math and science classes too. In addition to my general
courses, I completed my private to multi-engine instructor certifications. To
fly in other countries, I went through additional testing and training. I am
now licensed in other countries.

What activities do you suggest for young children or young adults to
prepare them for a career like yours? What are your future plans?
The Girl Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, and the ACE Academy have activities that
expose young girls to aviation. Core values are taught in each of these
organizations.

In the future, I will continue writing aviation books.
