Pilot and Attorney
Hi, my name is Carmen and I am a student pilot in Georgia. I don’t have any
children, just a husband (who happens to be an A&P mechanic and also a
private pilot) & 2 cats.
My grandfather was a member of the Army Air Corp during WWII and several
of his friends played a large role in my childhood. Also my father learned to
fly in his early teens thus aviation was always around me. A fly-in community
was developed near our home and as would be expected, we spent a lot of
time and made a lot of friends there. (I met my husband while “talking
planes” in a friend's hangar...)
I will soon be a private pilot. It just seemed the natural thing to do. My
father funded the process when I was away at college by 'bribing' me home
on weekends and holidays with the promise of flight time. I currently own
and fly a Cessna 172.
I am actually an attorney by day and a student pilot whenever I can steal the
time! I enjoy general aviation because it allows a different view of the
ordinary. Everyone knows what objects look like from the ground, but as
Amelia Earhart said, "You haven’t seen a tree until you've seen its shadow
from the sky."
My funny story = Flying out of a towered airport in the south is fun for a
female. My husband lets me work the radios even when it is his leg to fly
because he says that ATC treats a female voice better... after all, studies
show men respond more effectively to a female voice.
Q WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU SUGGEST FOR YOUNG CHILDREN OR YOUNG
ADULTS TO PREPARE THEM FOR A CAREER LIKE YOURS?
Study and do your best in school. A good education opens a world of
opportunities. My future plans include combining my law degree and my
pilot's license by practicing aviation law. Also, my husband and I plan to open
a flight school and FBO in a few years.
