Pilot and Program Coordinator, Aerospace Resource Center
Hi, my name is Judy. I was born in Columbus, Ohio, but currently reside in
Orange Park, Florida. I have one son, 30 years old; two cats, and was born
wanting to fly though I did not fly until I was 40 years old because I was
told that girls don't fly. I own a Grumman AAIA. My hobbies are FLYING!
Gardening, reading, working-out, running. I was a special education teacher
until I learned to fly. My goal is helping others realize they can work toward
their dream. Best thing about being a woman pilot: The bathroom is always
open at the airport!
I am Program Coordinator, Aerospace Resource Center; as well as the
President for Careers in Aviation. The Aerospace Resource Center and
Careers in Aviation allows me to build partnerships across the country to
make differences in the lives of students and the aerospace industry. In
addition, I am Vice-President to the National Coalition for Aviation and
Space, an all volunteer organization with a mission to bring industry and
education together.
My position with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) as Deputy Director Aerospace
Education and with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) as the
Executive Director Youth Education involved a wide variety of skills, to
include: collaborations with various national aerospace education
organizations; developing, writing, and editing curriculum; script writing and
video production; implementation of curriculum programs in schools
through-out the nation; professional development; large scale
volunteer/member coordination efforts; coordinating the largest air show
event in the nation for youth, KidVenture; and director to two national
aerospace conferences.
My former employer, Pitsco Incorporated, allowed me to travel across the
country writing and implementing aerospace programs for teachers and
educators. As an Aerospace Programs Development Specialist, I also did
marketing and resource development.
Throughout my life, I have had a passion for aviation and aerospace
technology. This interest and sixteen years in formal education eventually
brought me into the field of aerospace education. I value the experience
gained in special education because it gave me a broad knowledge of the
learning process. The National 4-H Aerospace Curriculum Project hired me
to produce a series of publications that eventually involved 35 businesses
and thousands of pre-college 4-H members. During the 4-H project, I
learned to fly and currently hold a private pilot, instrument rating,
commercial, and am continuing toward my CFI.
I am the proud owner of a Grumman TR2 airplane. My goal is to share my
passion for aviation and my extensive experience with youth and adults
everywhere.
My work through CAP, EAA, Pitsco, and 4-H has taken me to almost all 50
states presenting aerospace teacher workshops and youth aerospace
programs. The EAA SMT Elementary Project will impact over ¼ million
students in grades 3, 4, and 5 within 4 years. KidVenture/AirVenture in the
year 2001 provided over 10,000 young participants an aviation educational
opportunity in 5 days. The National Conference on Aviation and Space
Education and the Leadership Conference on Aviation and Space Education
reaches thousands of educators and leaders in industry each year.
What role do skills in math, science, engineering and technology play
in supporting your job? SCIENCE & MATH - can't fly without knowing.
What activities do you suggest for young children or young adults to
prepare them for a career like yours? Read, read, read - Study!
