Theresa

Pilot and Student of Aviation Science and Physics

I'm from St. Louis, MO, and I go to school there at Parks
College of St. Louis University. I'm majoring in Aviation Science
and Physics. I'm currently a junior and want to be an astronaut.

As a child, my grandpa worked for Boeing, but I had never
even been on a plane until I was 14. My parents always
encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to do, just to work
hard and stick with it.

Currently I'm still in school, but my goal is to be an astronaut
for NASA. It'll be tough, but it's my dream and I know that if I
stay dedicated to myself, I can do it! So far I've learned that
sometimes the training is tough, but it's worth it to keep going.

I'm currently a private pilot with an instrument rating. I'm
working on a commercial/multi-engine certificate. I trained in a
Socata Tampico TB-9 for my private and now I'm in a Piper
Seminole PA-44. I don't own an airplane, but I'd love to
someday!

I'm a full-time student, but over the summer I work for the
Future Astronaut Training Program and the Aviation Camp
Experience as a camp counselor at the Kansas Cosmosphere
and Space Center.

The best part of what I'm doing now is that I'm still a student
and my options are wide open for my future.

Whenever I tell people that I want to be an astronaut, they are very
supportive and tell me to go for it. It's great to get that much
support from complete strangers. Also, when I fly I have to sit on a
cushion because I'm 5 feet tall. I think it's funny to be sitting on a
"booster seat" but it's worth it to see out of the plane!

Q     What role do skills in Math, Science, Engineering and Technology
play in supporting your job?
I've taken a lot of math and science classes. It really helps me to
understand how planes work.

Q     What activities do you suggest for young children or adults to
prepare them for a career like yours?
Study hard in school and go to a school with a great friendly flight
program. If you're interested, try getting to fly in a small plane
before you commit yourself.
