I returned home one evening after a very long 8 day tour flying (each one a 12-14 hour duty
day and wakeups well before 6am). I had bought flowers on the way home with the intent of
planting them before I have to leave again (or they may not get in before fall!). My 9 year old
neighbor, Rachel, listened to me complain that I was too tired to put them in before sunset,
but cheered me on, “You can do it! You’re a Girl With Wings!” Now, how can one argue with
that logic? We all need (and need to be) a cheerleader sometimes….
And cheerleaders are needed: Sherry has a 14-year-old daughter who attended NASA
Aviation Challenge Camp in Birmingham, AL. Since then, they have had some family issues
and she has has had trouble in middle school. Mom says, “FLYING IS ALL SHE TALKS ABOUT AND ALL SHE WANTS
TO DO WITH HER LIFE!!! Can you please send info on how we can get help for her to learn to fly...? This is a
desperate single mom looking for someone (other than me) to tell her it is possible. She is a great kid, smart,
talented, but we need help. I thank you for hearing my plea, and I pray someone is able to help. It would mean the
world to a young woman who has been through so much for the past 5 years.” Send me an email to get her info.
Looking for Volunteers in June:
 | | On the 2nd, “Girl Power:” to expose young women to available careers at the Great Lakes Science Center in |
| | Cleveland, OH. Set up a table with information about the many ways young women can get involved with aviation as a passion or a career.
|
 | | Cloud Club II (Clinton, MD) is hosting an event in early June to expose young women to aviation opportunities, |
| | scholarships, news, history, etc. Date to be determined by volunteer’s schedule.
|
 | | June 26th or 27th for The Girls Scouts at The Lake Erie Nature and Science Center in Bay Village, OH. They are |
| | looking for a woman pilot to come out to a GS summer camp and talk to the girls about flying.
|
These events are so rewarding; as a spokesperson you get to interact directly with those who may follow in your
footsteps. Please ask around to others if you can’t make it, we need to take advantage of these opportunities. Cheer
them on! Also, please visit http://girlswithwings.com/volunteer.html to let me know how you are willing to help. Once I
have specific information about you, I can better match up requests with volunteers. Still more events at www.
girlswithwings.com/Calendar.html.

Space Camp Events: June 13th is the Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction in Huntsville,
AL with emcee William Shatner. And on June 14-16th and June 21-22nd (other dates
also) 25th Anniversary of Space Camp. Throughout the summer of 2007, the U.S.
Space & Rocket Center will be hosting VIPs and guest speakers. Current scheduled
guests include Girls With Wings Maj. Jill Long, Cmdr (ret.) and Trish Beckman. For
ticket information, go to www.spacecamp.com and click on the Space Camp logo at the
top of the upper left menu.
New Survey Page
 | | You can tell me how I can improve this Girls With Wings eZine.
|
 | | Study on Flying Habit Accommodations to identify how aging affect pilots & flying habits and to identify |
| | strategies pilots used to compensate for age-related changes.
|
 | | Also: Ivy is conducting a study to investigate the history of female commercial pilots and will attempt to explain |
| | the reason for the sluggish increase in women interested in the airline industry as a career path. Women seem to be avoiding aviation as a career - what factors influence women’s decision to do this? The research will attempt to evaluate and prove that gender stereotyping by passengers or fellow pilots plays a role in the decision-making process. All the surveys are here: http://girlswithwings.com/Survey.html

Upcoming Girls With Wings Visits! We will be at the AOPA Fly-in on June 2rd in Fredericksburg,
MD, and EAA AirVenture in WI from July 23rd to 29th. If you haven’t been to Oshkosh, it’s a
great time. If you would like to donate some of your time to working the Girls With Wings booth,
we have a place for you to stay. Yes, we are again going to rent a camper and drive to the
Airshow. At right, GWW last month at the Ohio Business and Professional Women Conference in
Columbus, OH.
Kim completes her solo flight: Kim is doing her private pilot training out of Farmingdale, NY (KFMG), and completed
her solo ride on May 27th. She is one of the GWWs on the site and is a very active volunteer with the organization.
We all are so pleased with her achievements! We have posted a video of her third landing taken
by her proud instructor on www.girlswithwings.com.
Even the tower controller says, “Good Job, Kim!”
And that’s not all! Kim has just received word that she has been selected to go to the US Air Force Flight School next year courtesy of the C-5 Air Guard unit in Newburgh, NY. Way to go, Kim!

The International Forest of Friendship: My Lake Erie 99s chapter has sponsored me to be inducted into the IFOF;
a living, growing memorial to the world history of aviation and aerospace. The Forest was a gift to America
on her 200th birthday in 1976 from the City of Atchison, KS (the birthplace of Amelia Earhart); The Ninety-Nines
(International Organization of Women Pilots) and the University of the Kansas Forestry Extension.
