F
Girls With Wings (GWW) is a non-profit organization encouraging more girls
to develop an interest in aviation through early introduction and participation
in specialized presentations in educational and aviation based venues, as well
as through our website. Our goal at GWW is to nurture self confidence and
motivate young girls to pursue various aviation careers later in life with
community outreach and public awareness efforts.
We use aviation to entertain and educate girls
about their limitless opportunities for personal growth.

"Any pilot can describe the mechanics of
flying. What it can do for the spirit of man
is beyond description."

- Barry Goldwater, US Senator and
                                      Presidential Candidate.
I conducted four Girls With Wings presentations at a local Girl Scout camp
having a National Astronomy day. One is tiring, so four just about wore me
out! This is an interactive presentation to teach girls “everything” they need
to know to fly an airplane. These girls have a lot of energy and if given the
opportunity, will enthusiastically respond to a (shhh!) educational activity.
I have been a pilot for sixteen years now and can
say that I am truly passionate about flying.
Approximately five years ago, I discovered a way
that I could channel my energy and enthusiasm
for aviation by founding Girls With Wings. My
background as a pilot is from the military,
regional and fractional airline flying where I flew
everything from Hueys to the Citation X. Along
with my technical knowledge, I have a rich
collection of experiences that can be used to
inspire girls to achieve their full potential (as do
the other GWW Role Models).
I have presented my GWW program with
fully rounded demonstrations to more than
a thousand girls, with a short version of
“everything” a pilot needs to know in order
to complete a flight, to schools, Girl Scout
groups, career days, etc.  This interactive
presentation incorporates various
aeronautical products, and begins with a
talk where I ask the girls if they think they
could ever figure out what a pilot does, to which they invariably reply “no.” I
ask the girls about their experiences with aviation. Do they know any pilots,
have the ever been on an airplane before? Have they seen what's up there
in the cockpit, and do they think they could figure out what all of that stuff
does? I tell them that I did not grow up wanting to be a pilot, but someone
once told me it was really tough and so that's what I chose to do. Most
girls can relate to being told that they “can't” and that they're stubborn, so
they get to see a real life example of someone who has been successful at
what she loves!
Highlights of the presentation: using
aeronautical charts to navigate to your
destination, learning the role of Air
Traffic Controllers and how to talk on
the radio, how to read and use the 6
main instruments, basic aerodynamics,
and how an engine works. This
culminates in the final demonstration of
their “pretend” flight as shown below. I
then remind them that they told me
they never thought they would be able to figure all this “stuff” out. My
mission is to illustrate that they can comprehend anything, achieve any
feat, and even fly a plane if they just put their minds to it.  Perhaps their
future is not in aviation, but this still is a fantastic tool to help them to
understand the true meaning of this lesson: doing what they love may
require hard work and study, the results of which can be great rewards and
personal satisfaction.
If you'd like to know more you'll have
to schedule a
presentation to your
school, Girl Scout troop or other
group. Or become a Girls With Wings
presenter yourself! Due to the
increasing success of and positive
press for Girls With Wings and
nationwide support for our goals, I
have scheduled volunteer training
sessions in conjunction with GWW Club
certification in Minneapolis, MN, followed soon by sessions in Cleveland,
OH, Washington, D.C. and the New York City area. There are many groups
located around the country interested in hosting a presentation, so I am
looking for women willing to help reach out to their community.
